About this event

When Power Gets in the Way: Coaching Leaders Through the Lens of Power
Presented by Julie Diamond, Ph.D.

Learning strand: Professional Development

Program Description:

There’s an old saying: the higher you rise, the funnier your jokes. But it’s no joke that
power changes you. It alters your perceptions, judgment, and behavior. What’s less known
is that power doesn’t just change you, it changes the world around you. People are less
willing to speak up, trust their perceptions, and take risks. They give you less honest—and
less accurate—feedback. The result? The more impact you have, the harder it is for you to
see it. You’re leading through a distorting lens of power.

In this workshop, you’ll learn about the blind spot power creates; gain skills for helping
leaders navigate the challenges of their high-power roles; and come away with a deepened
understanding of your own relationship to power, so you can support your client to be their
best, and bring out the best in the people they lead.

Learning Objectives:
At the end of this session attendees will come away with:
- Skills for helping clients in high power roles create more psychological safety, open
up conversations, and increase engagement of those they lead;
- A deepened understanding of the effects of power on self-insight and identity, and
the challenges this creates for leaders; and
- Awareness of their own relationship to power and rank—the ways in which their
personal experience of power influences their work with clients in high-power roles.
